The School of Public Policy and Social Research was created in 1994 to meet the need for a new approach to policy education, policy research, public service, and advising policy makers. Our distinctive approach emphasizes solving problems across boundaries – between the public, private, and nonprofit sectors, branches and levels of government, cultures, and countries.

The School’s three outstanding departments – Policy Studies, Urban Planning, and Social Welfare – offer excellent professional programs that contribute in significant ways to solving problems across boundaries. Together, the three departments give students unparalleled opportunities to enhance their education by tapping the curricular offerings and research of each. Our graduates are more prepared for effective practice because of our attention to a larger field of ideas. This breadth of offerings also invigorates our outstanding Ph.D. programs in Social Welfare and Urban Planning.

We have created an environment rich in diversity, flexibility, innovation, and above all quality. Building on the excellence for which UCLA is internationally known, our graduate programs are designed for highly motivated, exceptional students from all backgrounds looking for a combination of scientific analysis and real-world experience.
