A cluster consists of three courses selected from one of the following groups. Students may petition to substitute other upper division courses in designing their clusters.  
 

POLICY STUDIES 
In conjunction with the core and capstone courses, the Policy Studies Cluster will give students analytical and substantive skills to prepare them for graduate study or careers in the public policy field. Courses emphasize the workings of the policy process by examining how policy proposals are formed, what factors promote successful  policy implementation, how policies are evaluated, and to what extent are there differences across levels of government.  

The Policy Studies Cluster will consist of the following courses from which a student will select three:  
 
Policy Studies 101:  Drug Abuse Control 
Policy Studies 102:  Rational Self Interest: Concepts and Paradoxes 
Policy Studies 103:  Ethics, Morality, and Public Life 
Policy Studies 104:  The Culture and Political Structure of Los Angeles 
Policy Studies 120:  Race, Inequality, and Public Policy 
Policy Studies 142:  Labor Markets & Public Policy
  

SOCIAL WELFARE 
The required course (Social Welfare 100A) builds upon the core courses by applying the concepts and framework for understanding policy formulation and implementation of social policy and social welfare programs. Students may then select any two additional courses in the cluster to focus their preparation in public policy more specifically.

URBAN POLICY AND PLANNING 
This cluster gives students an overview of the evolution of city planning and policy-making, urban theories, current urban planning and policy debates, and an in-depth look at a specific sub-area of urban planning and policy.

LABOR AND WORK 
This cluster provides students with a basis for understanding the connections between labor issues and public policy. Public policies extend deeply into the contemporary workplace, with important consequences for business, labor, and the public at large. Students will learn from several leading scholars in labor and employment-related fields and will gain insight into practical applications for policy research and analysis. These courses will be offered beginning Fall 1996.
