According to legend, St. Thomas, known to Catholics as the Evangelist of the Americas, arrived in Mexico sometime around 28 A.D. His ship had a serpent figurhead at the bow which to the ancient Mexicans looked like their god Quetzalcoatl. Here is a large map of pre-Columbian Mexico showing the areas supposedly visited by St. Thomas. The Virgin of Guadalupe is illustrated in the panel on the left side (not shown here).
