At the 1980 Census, more than half of the population was of Hispanic origin (70 percent). Finally, in 1990 people of Hispanic origin constituted 82 percent of total population in the Byzantine-Latino Quarter. Thirty-seven percent of the population was of Mexican origin, 22 percent was of Salvadoran origin, eight percent of Guatemalan origin, 4 percent of Nicaraguan origin, and 3 percent of Honduran origin. The table also shows that the population of Mexican origin increased from about 1 percent in 1940 to 41 percent in 1980, and then decreased to 37 percent between 1980 and 1990.
