| According to the Bureau of the Census, there were 27,313 foreign born
residents in the Byzantine-Latino Quarter in 1990, representing 69 percent
of the total population, compared to 33 percent of Los Angeles County's
foreign born population. Table 1, like Figure
1, shows the distribution of foreign born residents in the Byzantine-Latino
Quarter at each census from 1940 to 1990. Foreigners comprised only 12
percent of the total population of the area in 1940 and 14 percent in 1950.
A considerable increase of foreign born residents occurred between 1950
and 1960 (from 14 percent to 41 percent), as well as in the following decade.
At the 1970 Census foreign born residents constituted 65 percent of the
total population of the area. As Table 2 shows, from
1940 to 1970 there was a considerable increase of foreign born residents
coming from Mexico. In 1940, Mexicans constituted 7 percent of total foreigners,
whereas at the 1970 Census they represented 33 percent. In 1940, most of
foreigners came from Europe and Canada. In particular, Europeans came prevalently
from England and Ireland, Sweden, Germany and Austria, Italy, and the Eastern
European block (USSR, Poland, Hungary, Czechoslovakia). Those coming from
Eastern Europe, who most likely were Jewish, showed an increase between
1940 and 1950, while all other European and Canadian groups started to
decrease. The table also shows that the presence of foreign born residents
coming from other countries increased throughout the decades from 22 percent
to 55 percent of total foreigners. This growth is due to the increasingly
significant proportion of foreign born residents coming from Central and
South America in the Byzantine-Latino Quarter.
