According to the 1990 Census, the majority of the population
of the Byzantine-Latino Quarter speaks Spanish. Seventy-three percent of
the households are Spanish speaking, compared to the 26 percent in the
county. Only 10 percent of the households speak English, and 15 percent
of the households speak an Asian or Pacific language. The corresponding
figures for the county are 59 percent and 8 percent. One percent of the
households speak a language other than English, Spanish, or Asian/Pacific,
compared to 7 percent of the households in the county.
As Table 1 also shows, a very high proportions
of the households in the Byzantine-Latino Quarter are linguistically isolated
- 53 percent vs. 13 percent in Los Angeles County.
