ENDOWED FUND FOR CANADIAN STUDIES AT UCLA
|
In view of the importance of Canada-United States relations, the scale of economic, social, and cultural activity between the two countries, and Canada’s distinctive role in international affairs, the Government of Canada has established an Endowed Fund for Canadian Studies at UCLA. The founding gift for this initiative has been made possible through the generosity of the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade of Canada/ Le Ministère des Affaires Étrangères et du Commerce International du Canada.
The aim of this collaboration is to encourage interest in Canadian Studies across the disciplines at UCLA and to promote a broad base of exchanges with Canadian universities. An equally important goal is to bring, under the auspices of this program, Canadian policy-makers and leaders to UCLA to discuss major issues concerning Canadian society, economy, and culture, as well as Canada-U.S. relations.
One of the major objectives of the endowment is to bring a distinguished Canadian scholar or political figure each year to the UCLA campus for a week of intensive lectures, seminars and discussions on critical Canadian issues, particularly in so far as they relate to Canadian-U.S. relations. The following individuals have visited the campus under the auspices of this program:
2000-2001: Sylvia Bashevkin, Professor of Political Science, University of Toronto, Canada
2001-2002: Meric Gertler,
Goldring Professor of Canadian Studies; Director, Program in Planning, and Co-Director, Program on Globalization and Regional Innovation Systems, University of Toronto, Canada.
2002-2003: Lloyd Axworthy, Director and CEO of the Liu Centre for the Study of Global Issues, University of British Columbia, and former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Government of Canada.
The Canadian Studies Endowed Fund is institutionally located in the Center for Globalization and Policy Research and is administered by the Director of the Center.
