TransCAD Assignment #1: Tutorials

Results should be posted to your web page by Friday, May 14th.

We will make zerox copies of sections of the tutorial for TransCAD available during class. In addition, copies will be left at the front of the lab.

These exercises will introduce you to the mechanics of displaying and manipulating raster data using TransCAD. At first, you should become familiar with the new GIS interface, which is basically the same as Calipher's GIS software called "Maptitude". Notice the similarities and differences of how TransCAD performs GIS functions compared to ArcView.

In the later part of this tutorial, you will be briefly introduced to the modeling capabilities of TransCAD, which clearly sets it apart from ArcView in terms of transportation analysis. We will go into these functions in more detail in our class discussions and exercises.

Watch out for a few things with the TransCAD tutorial. This is a full-functioning demo of TransCAD, but you can only use data supplied for these exercises with this demo. In addition, you cannot reuse files you generate once you quit the program. In addition, you will be kicked out of the program every 60 minutes, so quit out of the program and restart it every time you complete a major section to be sure you don't run out of time. A fully functional version of TransCAD will be made available for use on subsequent class projects.

Please make screen prints at the following points in the tutorial and place those screen prints on your web page:
  • The layout at the end of Project 2 on page 37
  • The matrix at the end of Project 3 on page 50
  • The map after Step 8 on page 58.
  • The map and dialog box after step 13 on top of page 72.
