Tutorial Assignments During the first phase of the course, you will be introduced to all the essential mechanics of ArcView. Part of this process is to complete the 29 chapters of tutorial exercises in Getting to Know GIS: the geographic information system for everyone (includes CD-ROM). This phase is very intense requiring considerable time. This is primarily a self-learning stage, but the instructors will be available for consultation if needed. As you do the tutorial, think about how the processes you are learning can be used to answer questions you are interested in. Also, consider how the steps you are taking relate to the broader concepts and logic of Geographic Information Systems. Also, lab exercises will require that you understand the concepts presented in the previous tutorial exercises. If you are working at home, you can install the tutorial exercises using the CD-ROM that came with the book. The tutorial program resembles ArcView, but is does NOT have the full capabilities of ArcView. If you choose to do the tutorial in the Public Policy Lab, please follow the instructions for using tutorial files in the lab. Screen Prints Due: You are required to post screen prints of the tutorial exercises completed to your web page. The syllabus indicates which tutorial chapters should be completed each week. Create screen prints of the pages indicates in brackets after each chapter listed under "Assignments". For instance, "8-14" indicates that you should make a screen print of your work once you reach the bottom of page 8-14 in the tutorial. Labeling your work. Before making a screen print of your tutorial exercises, we'd like you to label the window with your name. If you are in the view environment, make the View window active and then select "Properties" under the Theme pull-down menu. Under the "Name" box add "-- Your Name" to the end of the titlea and click "OK" (see samples on the sample student web page). If you are in the Tables environment, make the same change to the Tables title using the "Properties" option under the Table pull-down menu. If labeling your screen prints causes you way too much grief, don't label your prints at first and make a point to tell us about it. Then post your screen prints to your web page as described in the How to Create and Post a Screen Print hint in order to make a screen print, edit it for the web, and post it to your web page. |
