Join World Bank President and keynote speaker James Wolfensohn, Dr. Kenichi Ohmae, policy makers, scholars, business people and community developers from around the world for the Global City-Regions Conference in Los Angeles on October 21 - 23, 1999. Hosted by the UCLA School of Public Policy and Social Research, the conference will provide a unique forum for three days of intensive dialogue on global city-regions, the motors of an increasingly integrated world economy and the loci of many new economic and social problems.

With populations that exceed 10 million, at least 20 of the world's city-regions are now home to more people than many small countries. Approximately 300 city-regions claim populations that exceed 1 million. The complex internal structure and external relationships of these city-regions present some of the most serious challenges to researchers and policy makers as we enter the 21st century. The intertwined dynamics of globalization and accelerated urban growth have made traditional planning and policy approaches increasingly problematical, yet more relevant strategies remain undefined. New ways of thinking about these dynamics and new policies to harness their benefits and control their negative effects are imperative.

The Global City-Regions Conference will provide the opportunity to participate in a free-ranging dialogue between scholars, policy makers and practitioners on vital policy questions in four critical areas: economic development, social welfare, the environmental consequences of urbanization, and governance. Infrastructure and technology issues will be addressed in each of these four areas, which will be explored through a mix of plenary lectures, presentation of papers and associated discussions, round-tables, and workshops organized by practitioners and community developers.

Please join us for what will be a stimulating and rewarding experience.

The proceedings of this conference will be published in book form by Oxford University Press.
