Allen J. Scott Honored by Swedish Society of Anthropology and Geography

Allen J. Scott

Allen J. Scott, Distinguished Professor of Public Policy and Geography, has been awarded the Anders Retzius Gold Medal by the Swedish Society for Anthropology and Geography. The honor is given on Vega Day, a holiday commemorating the conquest of the Northeast Passage by the explorer Adolf Nordenskiöld in his ship Vega.

The medal is named after the celebrated Swedish anatomist and physiologist Anders Retzius (1796-1860). His Majesty King Carl XVI Gustaf, will bestow the award on April 24, 2009.

Professor Scott was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1986-87, and was granted honors by the Association of American Geographers in 1987. He was elected fellow of the British Academy in 1999, and was the recipient of the Vautrin Lud Prize for 2003. He has occupied the André Siegfried Chair at the Institut d’Etudes Politiques, Paris, (1999), the First Trust Bank Chair of Innovation at Queen’s University, Belfast (2004), the Chaire d’Excellence Pierre de Fermat at the University of Toulouse-Le Mirail (2005), and the Wibaut Chair at the University of Amsterdam (2006).

His book On Hollywood: the Place, the Industry(Princeton University Press, 2005) was awarded the Meridian Prize in March 2006. In 2008 he gained the Carol and Bruce Mallen Lifetime Achievement Award for Published Scholarly Contributions to Motion Picture Industry Studies.
