CAREER SERVICES
MPP graduates
can expect their skills to be in demand by nonprofit groups and
private industry as well as by all levels of government. Nationwide,
there is a significant increase in the number of policy school graduates
working in the private and non-governmental sectors with organizations
such as KPMG Peat Marwick, the World Bank, the Sierra Club, and
Children's Defense Fund. Academic opportunities in teaching and
administration also are on the increase, as the number of public
policy programs continues to grow. UCLA alumni have secured positions
in the public, private and nonprofit sectors around the world from
Los Angeles to Angola. They have secured positions with the U.S.
Department of Justice, Catholic Relief Services, the California
Public Policy Institute, Booz Allen Hamilton Consulting, Kaiser
Foundation Health Plan, and private environmental consulting and
social marketing firms.
The School provides
extensive assistance to students in locating employment after graduation.
The Career Services Coordinator conducts workshops on resume writing,
interviewing, and job search strategies. The coordinator arranges
recruiter presentations and interviews, collects and lists career
positions in public policy, and identifies new and emerging positions
for MPP students. The School hosts internship and career recruiter
presentations by organizations such as the:
- U.S. Department
of State
- General Accounting
Office
- Office of
Management and Budget
- Congressional
Research Service
- Presidential
Management Intern Program
- Greenlining
Institute
- California
Legislative Analyst's Office
- California
State Auditors Office
The Career
Services website (http://www.sppsr.ucla.edu/careers/index.cfm)
provides examples of internship and career opportunities for MPP
graduates. Current students can search these listings by policy
interest, type of organization, location, or keyword. The online
listings for internships and jobs provide students an efficient
and convenient way to identify possible field placements and eventual
career opportunities. Students also have access to the UCLA Career
Center, one of the nation's premier university career centers. A
pioneer in online career services in partnership with JOBTRAK, the
UCLA Career Center provides online access to job listings and resources
available to students and alumni 24 hours a day at www.career.ucla.edu.
The center also offers one of the largest career resource libraries
in the country with exhaustive information about employers and careers
relevant to MPP students.
Besides employer
information and job listings, the School also offers excellent networking
opportunities. The faculty, alumni, research centers, Senior Fellows,
and the UCLA Policy Forum provide access to a wide variety of policy
professionals.
Students can
also tap the Career Network of the UCLA Alumni Association (www.alumni.ucla.edu),
a group of more than 4,000 alumni who voluntarily make themselves
available to students for professional networking. UCLA alumni are
well represented in prominent positions in all levels of government,
nonprofit organizations, and private industry worldwide.
