FINANCIAL
AID
There are generally
five sources of financial assistance for master's students at UCLA:
- Merit-based
fellowships and grants
- Teaching
assistantships
- Graduate
student researcher positions
- Nonresident
tuition fellowships
- Need-based
financial aid funding.
In addition,
extramural fellowships also are offered by many off-campus agencies
and foundations.
An overview
of the sources of support is included in the UCLA Application
for Graduate Admission, together with the Fellowship Application
for Entering Graduate Students, which should be completed by
all MPP applicants who want to be considered for merit-based awards.
Applicants who wish to be considered for merit-based fellowships
must submit all completed application forms to the Department
of Policy Studies and Graduate Division no later than January
15.
All admitted
domestic full-time students may apply for need-based financial aid,
which is administered by the UCLA Financial Aid Office, Level A,
Room 129-J Murphy Hall, (310) 206-0400, or online at www.saonet.ucla.edu/fa.htm.
All applicants for need-based financial aid must complete
and submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA),
obtainable from the Financial Aid Office, by March 2. Awards include
long-term, low-interest loans and work-study funds available only
to graduate students who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents.
These students may also apply through the Financial Aid Office for
federal Stafford Loans, which are long-term loans made by banks,
savings and loan institutions, and credit unions.
To be considered
for extramural funding, students must apply directly to the funding
organization. Most college libraries or financial support offices
keep listings of available grants or fellowships. The UCLA Graduate
Student Support Office maintains extensive files of the many types
of extramural awards available.
