GENERAL INFORMATION
Residency
for Tuition Purposes
All students
who are not residents of California must pay non-resident tuition.
For residency criteria, visit www.registrar.ucla.edu/faq/res.htm,
or contact the Residence Deputy, UCLA Registrars Office, 1113
Murphy Hall, Box 951429, Los Angeles, CA 90095-1429, (310) 825-3447.
Written inquiries also can be directed to the Legal AnalystResidence
Matters, 300 Lakeshore Drive, 7th Floor, Oakland, CA 94162-3565.
These are the only university personnel authorized to supply information
relative to residence requirements.
Housing
Housing
in Los Angeles, both off and on campus, is in great demand and students
should make arrangements early. Most graduate students rent off-campus
apartments in Westwood, West Los Angeles, Culver City, Mar Vista,
Palms, Santa Monica, or Venice. For information about privately
owned off-campus housing, contact the UCLA Community Housing Office
at 350 DeNeve Drive, Los Angeles, CA 90095-1495, (310) 825-4491,
or visit the Housing website at www.cho.ucla.edu/housing/cho.htm.
University
housing is available for married students and single-parent families
at University Apartments South, about five miles south of campus.
There is a waiting list for some apartments. For more information,
contact University Apartments South, 3200 Sawtelle Boulevard, Los
Angeles, CA 90066-1602, (310) 398-4692, or visit the UAS website
at www.housing.ucla.edu/housing/uasouth.htm.
Parking
Because
most UCLA students have cars, parking is a chronic problem. On-campus
parking is by paid permit only. A limited number of permits are
available each quarter, which are assigned through a needs-based
point system that considers a students class standing, commuting
distance, and employment or professional school obligations.
For fall
quarter, the first day to apply for a permit has generally been
June 1; the deadline for submitting applications is around Aug.
1. Students are encouraged to apply as soon as possible. Parking
permits are currently $129 per quarter for commuting students, and
$162 per quarter for on-campus students. Motorcycles and scooters
park free. For more information, contact UCLA Parking and Commuter
Services, 555 Westwood Plaza, Box 951360, Los Angeles, CA 90024-1354,
(310) 794-RIDE, or visit the Transportation website at www.transportation.ucla.edu.
Student
Health Services
The University
requires that all graduate students, including international students
on non-immigrant visas, have adequate medical insurance while enrolled
at UCLA. The University offers a low-cost, comprehensive health
plan, the student Medical Insurance Plan (MIP). The MIP fee is included
as part of graduate student registration fees. This is the only
method by which MIP may be purchased. Additional coverage is available
for eligible dependents: spouse, domestic partner and children.
Registration
fees cover basic outpatient health care at the Arthur Ashe Student
Health and Wellness Center, which includes a Womens Health
Clinic for treatment of gynecological problems, referrals to specialty
clinics, basic lab work, and routine x-rays. There are modest charges
for routine physical examinations, routine immunizations, prescriptions,
and contraceptive medications and supplies. The center provides
a network of community dentists who services to students at discounted
prices.
Students
who are insured under adequate private medical insurance may waive
MIP coverage by completing the Medical Insurance Waiver Request
included with the billing statement each quarter. For more information,
call the Ashe Center Insurance Office at (310) 825-4073, or visit
the Ashe Center website at www.saonet.ucla.edu/health.htm.
